I was in a band from SD that was fortunate enough to play with Hickey. They are still a huge influence on me. Matty scared me at first rambling on stage about the "pigs" and when he was "a little girl" until both our bands bunked down at the same punk house and he was really awsome to us, the kind of guy I felt was my friend even though I never talked to him again. I was crushed by the news of his passing. Matty was a true revolutionary!
hey, can anybody tell me more about VBF? i have never heard them..what does VBF stand for? what stuff did they put out other than the hickey split? is there a site of em somewhere?? i'd like to get an mp3 or 2 of them
i found out about matty's demise quite a while back, as unfortunate luck would have, through a hardcore band that made a stop in el paso. they were from s.f. and i asked if they knew the guys in hickey and he said, " yeah, i know them, but i have some bad news..." and then he went on to tell me that matty had slipped from the world via needle wormhole and i was kind of lost for a while. i remembered when i first helped bring the naked cult to el paso and even that was sort of a last second thing. all you can eat was going to be playing here and devon called asking if hickey could play, too, seeing as how the naked cult was going to be touring with them. so i set up the show with AYCE, hickey, v.b.f. and a few more bands, and you know what? el paso was hit with one ton of sonic fury. the naked cult changed everybody's life at rosarita's cantina that night. i dare say that they fueled everybody's life. the greatest thing was seeing matty say in his mangled spanish, "!YO SOY PUTISSIMO!" and then bash his les paul on top of his head like a hammer. it's how he won the crowd. and i ain't never been the same since. they were punk rock with an emphasis on rock and they had all the veracity of revolutionaries and the chops of legends. aesop influenced my drumming, and thus my life, at first sight. we became friends and introduced them to the kids in juarez, mexico where they became legendary and we visited the hickey hotel with every subsequent tour with vbf and later the chinese love beads and i just can't fucking believe that matty's gone. it's corny to say, but i actually decided to give marijuana a try after listening to "hicky is all about long hair and getting high" over and over and over ad infinitum one day after i had moved out to albuturkey, yet another life-altering, life-affirming experience. and right now all i can think about is how prophetic "make sure there aren't any squares at my funeral" was, and how i miss the genius of matty luv and aesop, and the patience and humor of both chubby and rizzlah. aesop, chubs, or rizzler, it'd be good to hear from you guys even if it's just a simple hello. i miss the hell out of you guys...
It's shocking. I just found out about matty's death in punk planet. i feel lame being so out of touch in san francisco and all. I have many great memories of seeing hickey and the fuckboys. Even though i wasn't especially close to him he was always very friendly. The man, the bands amazed and entertaing me to no end. It's such a bummer. My condolences to aesop and all matty's friends and family.
Right on for doing this memorial site.

Matty and I both worked there and they do great stuff for young idu's around hep c and od prevention. If some one(joe?) could add this to the links page that would be great.
ro
when i heard there was a mattyluv.com i thought to myself "will those fuckers never stop? the poor guy is rolling in his grave, i'm sure." but then chubby told me it was friends of his who made it... so now i'm checking it out and i actually think this is a nice tribute to the single most important influence on my life.
"wherever death may surprise us, it will be welcomed... provided that this; our battle cry, falls on some receptive ears. that another hand reach out and pick up the gun. that other fighting men come forward to uphold our funeral dirge to the staccatto of machine gun fire. a new cry of battle and victory, can i hear a 'hell yeah' my brothers?" -eldridge cleaver

Fuckboyz, Hickey, Miami, Yogurt, etc. all have a special place in my heart.
They each rocked me, and feel that I am a better person for having had the experience. Thank you Matty and Aesop.
Chain Whipped magazine has asked me to put together some art about Matty. If anyone would like to contribute please contact me. I'm going to be including alot of his drawings but it would be great to have some artwork from his friends and fans.
