i have the dredel tape. i was lucky enough to come across the guys from the bar feeders. one of them had a copy and swore to mail it to me. and he actually did. about 6 months later. if they are all gone, maybe i can help people out, by ripping some of it. who knows. don't wanna go stepping on any toes. e-mail if you're interested.
I remember how excited I was to play a show with Hickey in a house show in Denton Tx. all those years ago....
It was a big deal to me then and still is now...
I had been listening to the VGS/hickey split...and the whole thing seemed like story out of a movie...
Meeting Matty seemed like I was meeting an actor out of the movie...I got more anecdotes about the Hicky/VGS controversy
Matty was very complimentary about my band...it made my day...
I remember them playing "squares" and thinking that this was a really good night.
The next day I was driving to work and I saw Matty walking down the road with his shirt off...as I drove by I shouted "Helllllooooo Hickey" trying to imitate the VGS guy.
Matty just smiled really big and kinda nodded.
That was the last time I ever saw him or Hickey.
Not much of a story...
but thanks Matty...

does anyone still have any dr dredel stuff? if so, can it go up here? i heard a little of it on the return half of a trip to sf when we went to the hickey hotel only to find no one home. my travelling partner somehow procured a copy of it while in sf, and i (stupidly)never bothered to copy it.
anyone?

More memories of the Hap's night have seeped back into my addled brain.
Who can forget the hot "girl-on-girl" action in between sets!? I'm pretty sure one of the girls was either the infamous Tabasco woman or one of her friends.
Oh yeah, I broke my hand later on that night in a fit of jealous rage, but I ain't getting into that.
Hi, I've only recently become interested in matty's music. I've gotten all the Fuckboyz stuff I can handle, but would really like to hear some more hickey. All I have is the live at hap's and the split with fuckface. If anyone could hook me up with a tape or CD, I would happily send them a tape of some of the other stuff I have (mostly punk and hardcore). Thanks to everyone for helping to expose me to this shit.
Pat
I fuckin' LOVE this band. Why oh why didn't I get too see them?! Am I not cool? I am happy to have found them. I had the luck to see The Miami at 16th and Mission. Matty was a certified genius. His lyrics are truly poetic- and mixed with trash/metal punk a truly fantasic thing was created. Matty has gone to a better place & is rockin' out with his friends and family. The SF scene is dead! LONG LIVE THE SF SCENE!
an update on the HICKEY tribute:
it will be a double cd - disc 1 being the 20 some-odd band tribute and disc 2 being HICKEY live in Mobile(Home), Alabama (a true piece of HICKEY history to be sure). the live cd is done but the tribute had to go back to be remastered. and art still needs to be submitted by aesop or whoever is submitting it. pete's taking care of that. at any rate, they are on their way...
check suburbanjustice.com later this year.
after aesop disappears from microphone range he is next spotted in front of the club, in downtown pleasanton, in his boxers fending off 'prissy mod boys' with a pool cue. about 10 minutes later i walked into the back of the bar (where i had to hide periodically because i was only 19) and spotted matty humping a large black women who i later found out was the kind soul who smeared whipped cream all over him (hence the line 'could you smear me with whipped cream?' from Last Nite On The Planet) to neutralize the tobasco burn.
ah, Haps. ah, Pleasanton. ah, HICKEY. ah, Matty...
brad, i sent that song, so it should be there. hopefully it works and the quality isn't for shit. lemme know.
I think one of the funniest moments at that Haps show was when the girl was getting ready to throw more whiskey at Matty and Aesop saw her so he threw his drumstick ninja-style. It hit her glass out of her hand and temporarily saved Matty. Its the part of the show where a bunch of people cheer and Aesop yells "FUCK YEAH". I also remember Matty tackling the girl after he warned her he would kill her if she threw more beer in his face. I just remember Matty's guitar slamming into my knee, but I was laughing too hard for me to notice. God, that show was the greatest thing that happened in Pleasanton. I became a cult member that night. Matty's tattoo comments, Aesop threatening to cut that mod's throat, White Zombie, ah, priceless. I'm just glad Aesop didn't get killed by the guy who held a pool cue under his neck. 😲
i just want to give a big thank you to who ever is responsible for putting the tabasco incident up on this site. i just woke up so my words arnt feeling very expressive right now. but thanks, and for anyone who is keeping track of such things, the napoleon 7 inch was released by monkey bite records. and now thanks to scott jones you all can see my back fat!

Alan, thanks for the mp3 link. I've posted it on this website now, so everyone can get it from the audio/video or discography page.
I noticed that in both the Fuckboyz and Hickey live at Haps mp3's, the gig just seems to die when they play (forgive me not knowing the name of the song) "...she's driving me CRAAAAAZZZZYYYYYYY!!!..." (okay, I tried - some help here?) and people just seemed to want to kill Matt or, as what happened, throw tabasco sauce at his face...
One of my flatmates loved the mp3, she now screams "whiskey in my eye!" when she's at her funniest...
Matty's living on in us all, even those of us not lucky enough to have known him or to have been at any of his shows.
Holy crap, I just listened to the Tabasco Incident. I forgot how goddamned funny that night was. Thanks, Todd, for bringing it all back to me.

Someone emailed it to me a long time ago and I never got around to putting it up on the other discography.
People keep dying. That much is certain. Some off us live our lifes up too fast I guess. living too free. I'm yet another soul touched by Matty's music and crazyness. I first saw Hickey on Halloween night 1994, Blue Chair Music, Tampa Florida. There was crazy energy in the air. Everyone I was with was obliterated. We ended up naked of course, on stage singing misfits songs. One of my most cherished memories.
The next time Hickey came through town a year or so later they played a house party 2 blocks from my house in Ybor City. When they left they took my friend's underage runaway girlfriend with them and I thought "now that's a rock n roll band that just doesnt give a fuck"
In 1997, Hickey showed up again, and after a weird show at 403 Chaos, (where only Naked Tim from Miami and I would our clothes off) Hickey stayed at my house for a day or two. I took them to La Teresita for breakfast and we rocked out to Ringworm on the drive there. I ran a radio station out of my house at the time and the next day Hickey graced the Tampa airwaves with a live on air set. I recorded it with taped-together microphones and still have the tapes lying around somewhere. When I find them, I'll burn them to disc if anyone's interested.
Anyway, coincidentally the FCC came snooping around the same day Hickey played on the air. I think it was Matty who suggested I invite them in for coffee. (They declined and sped away). That same day, the white power freak Vincent Breeding (now David Duke's official spokesman) kept calling on the phone and threatening me for arguing with Duke during an interview. Matty was in the background saying "Up with the mud people!" After Hickey left my girlfriend found a ring of dirt around the toiletseat. I listened to their record for a month straight afterwards and we'd joke about that dirty ass toiletseat. I grew my hair long and got high everyday.
Believe it or not, now I'm running for City Council.
Thanks Hickey. Thanks Matty. Whereever you are, I'm sure your still dirtying up some toiletseats.
Long live the naked cult!

Ok, I've finally converted the Tabasco Incident to mp3 and uploaded it to the site. Get it
here.
Sorry it took so long, I had to borrow a copy (thanks Devon), which is rather embarassing, because I recorded the damn thing in the first place. It was my birthday, I was loaded. It's still just as funny almost 9 years later.
Its christmas eve and my thoughts turn to Matty, he really hated the holidays, when he would be on tour during this time of year he always said at least we would'nt have to suffer through it together, but it always made me sad I always felt that somehow my time with matty was limited, There was such an urgency in our relationship, I think I always knew it was just a matter of time before he moved on from this world to greener pastures. One christmas, I think it was '97, Hickey was'nt on the road for the holidays and we had christmas at Starcleaners and matty did did an acoustic set along with a alot of other great mission punk scene song writers and it was a great christmas even matty did'nt mind it so much. Today we lost another punk rock hero, Joe strummer, I bet Matty, Joe, Joey, and Dee Dee are all in a bar on the otherside rockin out on stage, playing Little Drummer Boy.
